Regarding Website Optimization Software

The solution you choose will depend on the volume of traffic you have. Taguchi type methods are based on what is called a fractional factorial test and use statistical techniques to reduce the volume of traffic to get a significant test. The Google Website Optimizer is based on a full factorial test and will require much more traffic to get a significant result.

Let’s say you have 15 factors with 2 variation per factor. Using Taguchi based methods you have 18 page variations in the test. Using GWO (full factorial) you have 32,768 pages to test. To get a valid test Read more

Installing Taguchi Split Test Software

June 8, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

One feature not mentioned in the video is that the code can be placed on a shopping cart page not on your domain and it will get tracked. This allows you to use the software on any site with an off site shopping cart. You do have to be able to place your code on the cart pages.

The setup loads files for your site in your site’s directory on our server operating in the Amazon EC2 Cloud. Using the Amazon EC2 Cloud allows for a highly reliable server and fast loading of the files by browsers. The number of sites on each of our Amazon EC2 servers is limited in order to maintain performance and allow for at least two years of data storage.

Another advantage of using Amazon EC2 is quick update of the system software as we add new features. It allows us to do the updates without any adverse impact on your site’s tracking and testing.

Monitor Your Site’s Activity

June 8, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

Use this front dashboard page to monitor your site’s activity and get an overview of traffic levels and sources. The other dashboard pages will give you more details regarding referrers and visitor interaction with your site. The data presented by these dashboard reports can give you ideas on where you need to test to improve conversion.

You can click the calendars in the right column of the dashboard to pick the time period to review. The time period you pick will then be used in all the other dashboard report pages. You can segment reports based on visitors per hour, per day, per week, or per day of the week.

Discover Visitor’s Path Through Your Site

June 8, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

This report page has a wealth of information. It helps you discover where you are losing visitors and where you are capturing their attention. That information can be used to improve the design of your overall linking structure. I can tell you with confidence, you will spend hours studying this report and the ideas will flow.

Don’t forget the link at the top of each box that takes you to the referring page. This makes it easier to discover your ranking in the search engines.

The keyword page can tell you all those keywords you never knew visitors were using to get to your site. It is a good idea to create specific pages for all those words. Link to that new page from that keyword’s entry page and you may get a double listing.

Discover Mouse Moves And Clicks On Your Page

June 8, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

I am always surprised by how visitors interact with my pages. It seems to rarely be the way I pictured it. This dashboard report helped me discover that fact and learn the parts of the page that caught the visitor’s eye.

Using this information allows you to get your most important message in the visitor’s focus area. That will improve conversion.

In the right column, there are graphs showing percent visitors who scrolled on the page, percent of page viewed, time spent on page, bounce rate and percent visitors who clicked a link. One graph that was not shown on the video was time flash file played. If you have flash on the page in the report, the graphic for flash view time will be shown.

Defining Your Test Target Actions

June 8, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

The software gives you the ability to split your traffic between the control and test pages at whatever level you specify. This option is used to maintain income from the control page while trying to find a better performing page.

If you are driving traffic to your site using PPC, you can specify in the URL a query variable that tells the software the ad variation that generated the visit. This allows you to test ad against landing page so that ROI on PPC is maximized.

The text input at the bottom of the links list probably needs more explanation. The final target action, such as cart checkout, may be several levels away and a direct link to it is not on the test page. In that case, you can put the target URL in the text input area. As you use the text input, a new one will be created so that multiple inputs can be entered.

Note on the list of links, there may also be form submit entries and flash play entries so that those can be tracked. All of the actions you specify here will be reported on during test and can also be edited during test.

Easily Create Test Factors

June 8, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

The key to testing is the creation of your test design. With our software, you can create each test factor and its variations or levels using a WYSIWYG editor. This allows the full design to be done without any coding. But you can if you want to, because the editor does have an HTML tab.

You can also change the CSS and apply the change to only the test page or to a defined class across the entire site. This will allow you to change a background color or the font and apply the change across the site so that the visitor gets a consistent presentation.

There is also a Text edit button that allows you to specify a string and its replacement. This can be applied to only a single string or all occurrences of the string on the page.

As you develop test factors with variations, you can preview any combination you wish to by selecting the factor variations and click preview.

You can create several factors with just one variation on each and then use them all in a split test. The split test will create a page with all the variations applied and test it against the control page. Sometimes this is the quickest way to get started because you can generate a new best performing control to take into the Taguchi test.

The WYSIWYG editor makes the whole process friendly and easy.

Define Interactions And Start The Test

June 8, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

Some people have suggested that testing of interactions cannot be done using the Taguchi Method. That is simply incorrect and demonstrates a lack of understanding. Taguchi developed his arrays specifically to allow for interaction testing. Our software uses the full power of the Taguchi Method.

On the start test page, you can define the factor interactions you would like the software to test. If you do not specify these, the software will still evaluate interactions based on the array it picks.

Notice I said, “It picks.” You do not have to know anything about the mathematics of the Taguchi Method in order to use the software. The software does the picking of the array and all the factor assignments to the array in the background. It will do this based on the interactions you specify.

Did you notice how easy it was to start the test? Just click the Start Test button and it starts. There was no cutting and pasting of code.

Test Report Tells You When Test Is Finished

June 8, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

In order to make it easy for you to know when the test is complete, the software will color the labels green to say it is ready, and red to say continue testing. This allows you to quickly review status of test and spot the best performing actions. You can also define different actions at any time because all actions on the page and site are being tracked at all times.

Something that was not pointed out in the video were the options in the right column. There you can filter results based on:

  • Referrer Source
  • Keywords
  • Visitor Browser
  • Operating System
  • Time Period
    • All Days
    • Week Days
    • Week End
    • Each Day of Week

You can also see performance of page based on first visit and value of your defined actions. The best design for inducing the visitor to scroll on the page or spend more time on the page can also be obtained.

Easily Place New Optimal Page In Confirmation Test

June 8, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

The confirmation test is important in establishing that the new optimal design will continue to out perform the control. This test tells you the true conversion rate you can expect from the new design.

Also, did you notice the split test feature? Sometimes you may already have a few good ideas on how to improve conversion. You can test these using a split test to create a new control to start with for your Taguchi test.

Use New Optimal Page As Control For New Test

June 8, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

Did you notice in that video that there was no cut and paste of HTML? That is one of the most beautiful features of this software. The new optimal page is immediately used as the site’s page when you clicked use this page. That feature accomplishes two important task.

First, since the changes are based on javascript updating the page, the search engines never see the new page. The rankings you have achieved with your site prior to testing are maintained. If you want to actually change the HTML code on the page file, you can.

As soon as you start using the new optimal page, you can begin a new test using that page. You do not have to cut and paste any code to use the new optimal page in a test. The software will get all your prior optimal designs and apply them prior to presenting the page for factor design in a new test.

These features make the software easy for anyone to use. It allows you to spend your time testing and optimizing your site and not in coding and updating files.
